Because just about every business owner I know feels that way. And the numbers back it up. So there\u2019s a ton of opportunity, low barrier to entry, and no standardized pricing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combine that with the fact that many think they just naturally \u201cget\u201d how to write great copy, and all it takes for someone to \u201cbecome a copywriter\u201d is a $10 book and the word \u201ccopywriter\u201d slapped on their website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all creates a confusing and costly landscape for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because there are no standards, the range is extremely wide for both experience and pricing (and the two don\u2019t necessarily correlate).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current culture around copy encourages people to charge very high prices \u2026 while learning the craft and creating quality work is secondary. Which is heartbreaking to me because I\u2019ve seen what great copy can do for a business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve worked with some of the best. People like IWT CEO Ramit Sethi, Ryan Levesque, and Jeff Walker, who regularly have multimillion-dollar launches. I\u2019ve worked on launches with 187 separate copy deliverables (yes, that\u2019s a real number), written sales letters for direct-mail powerhouses like Agora, and even launched my own products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And lately, I\u2019ve been working with seven- and eight-figure businesses to build out their content and copy teams. Like you, these businesses, despite having great success hiring for other positions, are confused and frustrated about where to find and how to hire great copywriters. (And in many cases, they overpay for mediocre talent.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me break down how you should approach hiring a copywriter in 3 simple steps:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e6afa67 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default qodef-elementor-content-no\" data-id=\"e6afa67\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5d377a6\" data-id=\"5d377a6\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-63a8f7f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"63a8f7f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Step 1: Figure out if you even need a copywriter<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a6bb6d9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a6bb6d9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of people who come to me looking for a \u201ccopywriter\u201d who don\u2019t actually need a copywriter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first is the <\/span><b>Mr. Desperate-For-Conversions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Often this is someone who has just launched their first product to crickets. They did all the \u201cright\u201d things \u2014 created a sales page, sent emails, ran a webinar \u2014 and instead of getting the $5 million launch they were expecting, they got two sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt must be the copy!\u201d they think. And they go out searching for \u201cthe very best\u201d direct-response copywriter to rewrite their sales page.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8b25ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a8b25ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a secret: copy can\u2019t save a bad product or bad marketing. If you don\u2019t have a good list or a marketing strategy, I could channel all the Eugene Schwartz and David Ogilvy I can muster and you won\u2019t get any more sales.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ee9cf8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ee9cf8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if your offer is no good (you\u2019re selling something people don\u2019t want, you don\u2019t understand your numbers, and\/or you haven\u2019t done any market research), copy won\u2019t fix that either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This situation sets up both the copywriter and the business owner for a lot of frustration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my experience a good copywriter will ask some key questions before you even start working together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a minimum, during your first call or two, the copywriter will want to know about your current copy and what you like\/dislike about it; info about your business like voice, market, strengths, and programs; testimonials from current\/former students; your goals for the project (why are you writing the copy, to whom, and with what result).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ll also ask what your marketing and traffic strategy is, who you\u2019re targeting, and all the details about the offer. So before you look for a copywriter, evaluate your offer by asking yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have high refund rates?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you inundated with customer service tickets AFTER the sale?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also glean a lot of insight from both buyer and non-buyer surveys by \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/how-to-double-your-revenue-next-launch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IWT has two great scripts here you can use!\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a first call with a potential copywriter, evaluate them by asking yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the copywriter ask a lot of questions during the prospecting process? At a minimum, a good copywriter will want to know about your current copy and what you like\/dislike about it; info about your business, voice, market, strengths, and programs; testimonials from current\/former students; your goals for the project (why are you writing the copy, to whom, and with what result).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have they given you new insight about your promotion or product?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do they seem excited about the project? (If you feel like you\u2019re \u201cjust another client\u201d in the beginning, you can expect communication problems down the road.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second type of person who comes looking for a copywriter is <\/span><b>Mr. This-Just-Needs-To-Get-Published.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, this person isn\u2019t actually looking for a copywriter at all. What they really need is a content writer. They have a high volume of needs (daily emails, guest posts, blogs, etc.) of what\u2019s called \u201ctop of the funnel\u201d writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the difference between copywriters vs content writers:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4a05b82 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4a05b82\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copywriters combine sales psychology, human behavior, and writing to make people take action. They write things like sales pages, landing pages, and ads. This writing has to convert.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A content writer is someone who writes things like blog posts, articles, and YouTube descriptions. This writing summarizes, engages, introduces, and educates. And they can do the same for their profile on Upwork, LinkedIn, Fiverr, Facebook, or wherever else they advertise their services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find low-cost copywriters (or more often, content writers) in all of those places. But to shortcut the costly trial-and-error, try these options instead.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b8f0e8f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default qodef-elementor-content-no\" data-id=\"b8f0e8f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-8c209da\" data-id=\"8c209da\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a720e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9a720e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">OPTION 1: Find copy you like and reach out to find the writer\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4bc3a5b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4bc3a5b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of your favorite online businesses have a team of copywriters who help produce the incredible copy you see. And while some of the time they are full-time employees and don\u2019t have the bandwidth to take on new projects, they are often freelancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Ramit didn\u2019t create this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tim.blog\/2016\/03\/04\/5-million-week\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$5-million week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on his own. The volume of copy was staggering! (I know, because I happened to be on that team.) One person would never be able to write all that himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can often reach out and find out who your colleagues and mentors work with, and get connected. But, only one place I know that\u2019s filled with pro-level copywriters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference between this forum and others is that it\u2019s a paid site. This keeps out the \u201ccopywriting!? I don\u2019t know what it is, but I bet I can do it\u201d crowd. Both business owners and copywriters have to pay a fee to join, but it is well worth it for both sides of the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a built-in job board, an opportunity to have any piece of copy critiqued, and even a vetted group of recommended copywriters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s run by a mentor of mine, Kevin Rogers, and is found at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/copychief.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">copychief.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve hired copywriters from Copy Chief and also found clients and partners there. There are a lot of copy pricing guides out there. And I asked them what they charged for 14 different types of common projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The range was insane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take online sales pages for example. The range started at $50 and went up to $17,000 + royalties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not helpful for anyone, so I dug in to answer, what\u2019s reasonable? First I took out \u201cside hustlers\u201d \u2014 those who said copywriting was not their main source of income (13%). Then, I took out all data for copywriters working less than two years, since many were still working out their prices and the ranges were least consistent during that time frame. If you have a lot of copy or content needs, you\u2019ll save a lot of money over the long term by hiring a full-time employee or even a copywriter on retainer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When negotiating price with a copywriter, ask yourself the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do they offer you a range of prices and\/or packages?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do their prices seem to match their experience level?
