No one can do it for me.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Carol Burnett<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.1lfi3w9bsjbk\">1. Get your calendar in order<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In our culture, \u201cbusy-ness\u201d is treated as a badge of honor, but it leads to the overwhelming feeling that you \u201cnever have enough time.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time to reassess what you are CHOOSING to give your time and energy to.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The first step to taking control of your life is to take control of your calendar, aka your time.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><em>GrowthLab CEO on keeping a productive calendar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>A well-maintained calendar\u2026<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keeps your\u00a0life and days <em>consistent<\/em>, so you usually know what to do every day and week and can mentally prepare.<\/li>\n<li>Protects your time. For example, I know I have to write almost daily and have the most energy in the morning. So I make sure to carve out a couple of hours in the morning to get solid, uninterrupted writing done.<\/li>\n<li>Frees up mental space so you don\u2019t have to try to remember every little thing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Managing\u00a0your calendar shouldn\u2019t take you long: 5-10 minutes the night before or morning of to look over your to-do tasks should suffice.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>To help me prioritize, one question I ask myself is: <em><strong>If I could finish only one thing today that would make me satisfied with my day, what would that be?<\/strong><\/em> Then I focus on that.<\/p>\n<p>I modified this question from a journal called Productivity Planner, and it helps me identify the things I need to do that would keep me up at night if I didn\u2019t finish.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.gr2a4dbn2gab\">2. Set clear boundaries and structure<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>When I first started my entrepreneur life, it was chaos.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Spontaneous invites to lunch or dinner tempted me with their momentary escape from my tasks. To-do list? More like \u201cto-do-later\u201d list. <\/p>\n<p>All the while I\u2019d feel guilty for leaving so many things undone and try to make up for it by pulling double time. It was a vicious\u00a0hamster wheel \u2014 my exhausting days begot more exhausting days.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The core problem?<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>I had no clear boundaries or structure to my day. And ironically, I <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/what-to-do-when-your-new-entrepreneur-life-feels-out-of-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">needed these artificial constraints for more freedom and flexibility<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Artificial constraints, like a 9-to-5 schedule where you know realwork<em>\u00a0should<\/em>\u00a0occur from 9 in the morning to 5 in the evening, help you stay on top of the things that actually get you closer to your short- and long-term goals,\u00a0but also give you the flexibility to do the things that recharge and fulfill you. A few ideas on what constraints could look like:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Following ONLY those\u00a0things\u00a0that are on your calendar (i.e., if it\u2019s not on your calendar, it doesn\u2019t exist)<\/li>\n<li>Restricting how long you can use certain time-wasting websites (*cough*Facebook *cough*YouTube). Tools like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stayfocusd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">StayFocused<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keepmeout.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KeepMeOut<\/a>\u00a0can help with that.<\/li>\n<li>Working in 30-minute blocks. Most of us canstay focused for 30 minutes, and often that\u2019s more than enough time to make good progress\u00a0(and build momentum for more work!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.2y11xz30xn51\">3. Being ruthless with what and whom you say \u201cyes\u201d to<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to say \u201cyes\u201d to opportunities and people for fear of missing out on experiences and future opportunities, but say yes to <em>too many things <\/em>and you could eventually\u00a0find yourself stretched too thin \u2014 in terms of time and energy.<\/p>\n<p>This ties back to the above points about your calendar and boundaries, because when your time and schedule are no longer your own per se, you\u2019ll feel out of control.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>For matters that involve a yes\/no decision, Sivers shares a <a href=\"https:\/\/sivers.org\/hellyeah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">great heuristic<\/a>\u00a0that you can apply for yourself:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:quote --><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><em>If you\u2019re not saying \u201cHELL YEAH!\u201d about something, say \u201cno.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When deciding whether to do something, if you feel anything less than \u201cWow! That would be amazing! Absolutely! Hell yeah!\u201d \u2014 then say \u201cno.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When you say no to most things, you leave room in your life to really throw yourself completely into that rare thing that makes you say \u201cHELL YEAH!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- \/wp:quote --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>There are times when saying <em>yes<\/em>\u00a0to many opportunities makes sense, but there are times when saying <em>hell yes! <\/em>genuinely excites you and opens possibly even greater opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>So look at your calendar: Which things are you less-than-pumped about? Get your sleep right, and everything else can fall into place<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, yeah, we <em>all <\/em>know sleep is important \u2014 just like we <em>all <\/em>know we should eat our vegetables \u2014 but how many of us <strong>actually do it<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph {\"align\":\"center\"} --><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/giphy.gif\" width=\"500\" \/><br \/><em>Guilty. *pours another cup of coffee*<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>While I *think* I can get away with little sleep, I find that on those days where I\u2019m operating on less than six hours of sleep, I move at a sloth-like pace \u2014 tasks that usually take me 30 minutes take me <em>hours<\/em>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and I feel more easily overwhelmed. <\/p>\n<p>But when\u00a0I actually do get enough sleep, I feel spry, full of energy, and ready to tackle anything life throws my way.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Simply put, a lack of sleep messes with you mentally, emotionally, and physically.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The good news is that this is one area in your life that you often have control over. You control when to stop at that \u201cone last email\u201d and prepare for bed.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>But for entrepreneurs or type-A overachievers (*raises hand*), reminding yourself to <em>go to sleep<\/em>\u00a0and sticking to it can be difficult. As with all things, it\u2019s a habit, and quite frankly, a matter of noticing the changes and positive impacts that a good night\u2019s rest can have on you.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Try this: if you can set an alarm to wake up, try setting an alarm to <em>go to sleep<\/em>\u00a0and following it like you are keeping an appointment.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.uuxwwcuqg3y1\">5. Establish consistency (and a routine)<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The word routine gets a bad rap.
