But it all starts with building your email list.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s talk about getting those first 1,000 subscribers.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.8bzrmyxnbjna\">How to build an email list: Focus on the RIGHT subscribers<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>A quick caveat before we get started: We\u2019re not just talking about <em>any <\/em>old subscribers here.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re talking about QUALITY subscribers. The kind of subscribers who turn into buyers.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/people-who-never-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">people will never buy your product<\/a>. And yes, some of these people will inevitably wind up on your email list. And that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But for the most part, you want to optimize your email list\u2013building efforts around <em>quality <\/em>subscribers. People who care about the things you care about, and who genuinely want the kind of advice that you have to offer.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to build an email list that attracts those kinds of subscribers \u2014 let\u2019s dive in.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.f0zi3upsmapx\"><strong>Step 1: <\/strong>Make an IRRESISTIBLE offer<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>There are a few social media groups for entrepreneurs that I creep on regularly, and there\u2019s one post I\u2019ve seen in those groups more times than I care to count.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It goes something like this:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI have my website up. I built my online course! I\u2019m ready for my customers! Where are they?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Questions like this bring out the exasperated Simon Cowell in me:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"how to build an email list -- Simon Cowell\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the reality: people aren\u2019t going to sign up for your list because your website looks good, or you ask nicely.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>If you want to build your email list, you\u00a0need to give people a <em>reason <\/em>to sign up.\u00a0And for that, <a href=\"https:\/\/optinmonster.com\/9-lead-magnets-to-increase-subscribers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you need a <strong>lead magnet<\/strong><\/a>:\u00a0a gift that you offer soon-to-be subscribers in exchange for their email address. For example:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Checklists<\/li>\n<li>Templates<\/li>\n<li>E-books<\/li>\n<li>Ultimate guides<\/li>\n<li>Video content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The format your lead magnet comes in is less important than what it does, namely: draw your readers in and get them to GIVE YOU THAT EMAIL ADDRESS.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It needs to be something your audience <em>wants<\/em>,that perfectly answers some question they have or some burning pain they\u2019re struggling with.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>That way, they won\u2019t just be <em>okay<\/em>\u00a0with giving you their email address \u2014 they\u2019ll be happy to.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/giphy-6-1.gif\" alt=\"how to build an email list -- Tony Stark\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of a lead magnet in action.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Sam Gavis-Hughson is the founder of a site called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte-by-byte.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Byte by Byte<\/a>, focused on helping computer programmers nail their coding interviews and land jobs at top tech companies. A while back, his email list was <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/breakthrough-launch-sam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hovering right around 500 subscribers<\/a>, mostly from videos he posted to YouTube.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Then, he introduced his first lead magnet: an e-book called <em>Dynamic Programming for Non-Geniuses<\/em><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden, his email list jumped from 500 subscribers \u2026 to 1,500.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-13-at-3.51.42-PM-1.png\" alt=\"how to build an email list -- Byte by Byte\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Why? Because he gave people a reason to sign up. The\u00a0e-book offered a solution to his readers\u2019 burning pain \u2014 understanding how to get through tough programming interview questions. Entering their email address was a small price to pay for something they<em>\u00a0already knew they wanted<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>ACTION STEP: <\/strong>Brainstorm a list of 5-10 lead magnets you can offer to prospective subscribers that solve problems you know they have RIGHT NOW.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.dr4rll4x1p79\"><strong>Step 2: <\/strong>Go where the fish are<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>So you create your delicious lead magnet that draws your customer in by making them realize that, actually, they <em>want <\/em>to give you their email address.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Next, you need to get out there and actually <em>find <\/em>some subscribers. For that, you\u2019ll need to find the<strong>\u00a0right fishing hole<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve talked about <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/go-where-the-fish-are\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fishing holes<\/a>\u00a0before, in the context of customer research. But fishing holes don\u2019t go away once you\u2019ve moved past that initial discovery stage and started creating content. In fact, they become even more important.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite things about working at GrowthLab is watchingpeople find the right fishing holes for their business. A few examples:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Instagram: <\/strong>Talia Koren added 700 new email subscribers in just one week last year for her online business, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/workweeklunch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Workweek Lunch<\/a>, using Instagram<\/li>\n<li><strong>YouTube: <\/strong>G\u00e9raldine Lep\u00e8regrew her email list from <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/how-i-grew-my-youtube-channel-to-2-7-million-views-without-cat-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">under 1,000 to more than 26,000<\/a>using her YouTube channel<\/li>\n<li><strong>Product Hunt: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/breakthrough-launch-zak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zak Slayback<\/a>added 1,000 new subscribers to his email list after posting a landing page on the tech forum Product Hunt that landed at the #5 spot for the day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s one more kind of fishing hole we should mention. In fact, it wouldn\u2019t be a GrowthLab post about growing your audience if we <em>didn\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0mention it, because it\u2019s our favorite: <strong>guest posting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Guest posting: The email list-building powerhouse<br \/><\/strong>If posting to your own personal YouTube channel or Instagramis like fishing with a single fishing pole, guest posting is like trading that fishing pole in for a net.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how it works:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You find a website that your target audience already loves,<\/li>\n<li>You write an <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/the-ultimate-guide-to-remarkable-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amazing, value-packed guest post<\/a>\u00a0for the site,<\/li>\n<li>People read your post, love your ideas \u2014 and then follow you back to <em>your<\/em>\u00a0website for more awesome content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Our CEO, Ramit Sethi, talked about how crucial guest posting was to growing GrowthLab and our sister site, I Will Teach You to Be Rich.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>For example, he guest posted on the website of <em>4-Hour Workweek<\/em>\u00a0author Tim Ferriss, whose huge audience of followers were already interested in the topics Ramit talks about. Ramit was able to turn those posts into traffic \u2014 and turn that traffic into subscribers.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just Ramit.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>One of our students, John Fawkes, netted 900+ subscribers from a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.myfitnesspal.com\/6-appetite-control-strategies-that-helped-me-stop-overeating\/?fbclid=IwAR0z8DfbO6e1smJNdJ4k-DO-WkoVy_ul6lv9v_fuU8yUe-c6BaH7AhKVJF0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guest post on the MyFitnessPal blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-10-at-6.09.44-PM.png\" alt=\"how to build an email list -- MyFitnessPal\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>And why limit yourself to blogs? Guest appearances on podcasts, YouTube channels, even in-person at conferences and events can fit the bill.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-24838\"><\/p>\n<figure podcast<\/a>.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p><\/div><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Anywhere that large groups of people in your target market gather to talk about the things <em>you <\/em>talk about \u2014 that\u2019s where you want to be, ready to give value and turn that value into SUBSCRIBERS.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>ACTION STEP: <\/strong>Make a list of 3-5 \u201cfishing holes\u201d where you know your ideal customers spend time and where you could potentially start publishing content that audience didn\u2019t even know they needed (yet).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
