Now he runs an online school called Learn UI Design, where he teaches user interface design to students all over the world and still freelances on the side.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>His email newsletter has more than 30,000 subscribers, and the business grew more than 60% last year.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and did I mention the business had made more than a million dollars?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Erik says:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s incredibly gratifying to not be living my life by someone else&#8217;s clock. I started this blog from my Stanford dorm room in 2004 and have built it into a multi-million dollar business with more than 10 products on how to start a business, earn more on the side, land a dream job, and live a Rich Life.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Erik, Shannon, and I are going to share our strategies on how we got to where we are \u2014 and how you can do it too.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Earn Your First Million\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>All three of us were able to earn our money through a powerful combination of two things:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investing and saving<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earning more money through side hustles<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Though you can actually make a million dollars on investing and saving alone, you can watch your net worth explode if you combine them both \u2014 which I suggest you do.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"debt\"><strong>Step 1: Get out of debt<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The number one barrier preventing people from compounding wealth is debt.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/blog\/how-to-get-out-of-debt-fast\/\">getting out of debt<\/a> is step one on the road to becoming a millionaire. Before you even think about investing, saving, or earning more money, you need to take steps to get out of credit card debt.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Getting out of debt was also a priority for Shannon when she and her husband\/business partner first got married.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my husband and I were first married, we were really disciplined about getting out of debt and saving,\u201d Shannon says. \u201cWe paid off all of our debt out of college. We paid off all of our car debt. And now we\u2019re paying off our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Paying off your credit card debt is one of the most important investments you can make into your Rich Life. I\u2019ve written extensively about this before, both on the blog and in my New York Times bestselling book.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in debt and want to learn more about my system, I highly suggest you read <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/blog\/how-to-get-out-of-debt-fast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my article on how to get out of debt fast<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: 'PP Mori', 'PP Mori'; font-size: 40px; letter-spacing: 0px;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: 'PP Mori', 'PP Mori'; font-size: 40px; letter-spacing: 0px;\">Step 2: Save money for when you need it most<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>By saving money, you give yourself the freedom to earn more money.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Shannon says:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMy husband and I were really good about saving money,\u201d Shannon says. \u201cWe created a six-month emergency fund that allowed us to take a small step back financially when I quit my job. But because we saved early, it gave us a lot of freedom to invest and earn.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to set savings goals.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>To find out how much you need in your emergency savings fund, you simply have to take into account three to six months worth of:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Utility bills (internet, water, electricity, etc)<\/li>\n<li>Rent<\/li>\n<li>Car\/home payments<\/li>\n<li>Food\/groceries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Basically, any living expense that you have should be accounted for.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>You should also\u00a0start an account exclusively for your emergency savings fund. Most banks allow you to create a sub-savings account along with your normal savings account. (You can even name them too!) So create one for your emergency fund.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"invest\"><strong>Step 3: Invest in your future<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<center><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-32154 \" style=\"border: solid 4px #ffffff; box-shadow: 0px 0px 3px 0px rgba(0,0,0,.15);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Graph-of-How-a-Roth-IRA-effects-your-savings-over-time-300x167.png\" alt=\"Graph of Roth IRA vs. savings account earnings over time\" width=\"602\" height=\"335\" \/><\/center>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Investing your money is the best way to guarantee you become a millionaire. In fact, I promise you, if you follow the systems below you will eventually become rich.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Shannon knows that too.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMy husband and I have been putting 10 &#8211; 15 percent of our earnings into our retirement accounts for a while now,\u201d she says. \u201cWe also have a 529 plan for each of our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to accounts for retirement, you have two options:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>401k<\/li>\n<li>Roth IRA<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>These are retirement accounts. That means you\u2019ll be able to accrue gains with big tax advantages with one caveat: you promise to save and invest <em>long term. <\/em>That means you can buy and sell shares of almost anything as often as you want as long as you leave the money in your account until you get near retirement age.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at each one.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: 'PP Mori', 'PP Mori'; font-size: 32px; letter-spacing: 0px;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: 'PP Mori', 'PP Mori'; font-size: 32px; letter-spacing: 0px;\">401k: Free money from your employer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>A 401k is a powerful retirement account offered to you by your employer. With each pay period, you put a portion of your <em>pre-tax <\/em>paycheck into the account. That means you\u2019re able to invest more money into a 401k than you would a regular investment account.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the best part: Your company will match you 1:1 up to a certain percentage of your paycheck.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Say your company offers 3% matching. The other account you should get is a Roth IRA. long-term investment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/blog\/roth-ira-vs-traditional-ira\/\">Roth IRA<\/a> is simply the best deal I\u2019ve found for long-term investing.<\/p>\n<p>Remember how your 401k uses pre-tax dollars and you pay income tax when you take the money out at retirement? Well, a Roth IRA uses after-tax dollars to give you an even better deal.<\/p>\n<p>With a Roth, you put in already taxed income into stocks, bonds, or index funds and pay <em>no taxes <\/em>when you withdraw it.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if Roth IRAs had been around in 1970 and you\u2019d invested $10,000 in Southwest Airlines, you\u2019d only have had to pay taxes on the initial $10,000 income. When you withdrew the money 30 years later, you wouldn\u2019t have had to pay <em>any<\/em>\u00a0taxes on it.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and by the way, your $10,000 would have turned into $10 million.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an exceptional example, but when saving for retirement your greatest advantage is time. You have time to weather the bumps in the market. And over years, those tax-free gains are an <em>amazing <\/em>deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: After you invest in your retirement accounts, you <em>can<\/em>\u00a0actually stop right there. After many years, your money will compound and earn you well into the millions if you continue investing.<\/p>\n<p>Say you\u2019re 25 years old and you decide to invest $500\/month in a low-cost, diversified index fund. It\u2019s simple:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a limit to how much you can save, but no limit to how much you can earn.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re willing to put in the work and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/blog\/second-income-ideas\/\">develop a hustle<\/a> that\u2019ll scale and grow, you can earn as much money as you want. And while there are a lot of ways you can make more money, my favorite way is by starting a freelance hustle.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what Shannon and Erik did, and they\u2019re going to show you how.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: 'PP Mori', 'PP Mori'; font-size: 40px; letter-spacing: 0px;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: 'PP Mori', 'PP Mori'; font-size: 40px; letter-spacing: 0px;\">Step 4: Find a million-dollar business idea (it\u2019s easier than you think)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One very common misconception about starting your own freelance hustle is that you need to come up with the \u201cperfect\u201d idea to do it \u2014 when that couldn\u2019t be further from the case.<\/p>\n<p>I know it\u2019s difficult to imagine that you might have profitable skills already \u2014 but you do. In fact, Shannon has a perfect solution to find out those skills: Look at what your friends ask you to help them out with. That\u2019s how she got her start as a freelance CPA consultant.<\/p>\n<p>From Shannon:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cI had a colleague who needed help sorting through her finances. She asked me to help her out, and she became my first client. Then I had another friend who started a law office and needed help, so I helped them out with all of their accounting. I\u2019d meet with them to make sure that they were still compliant and help with their tax returns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It just started with helping people as a hobby, but then my husband pointed out that I was getting clients without even trying. Eventually, I was able to start a freelancing business from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s just a matter of trial and error like it was for Erik. He says:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cBefore freelancing, I was at a large tech company, and regularly tried my hand at little entrepreneurial side-projects. Come to think of it, I&#8217;ve attempted to sell made-to-measure men&#8217;s suits, novelty wall clocks, coaching, and both product and digital design services. But nothing <i>really <\/i>stuck until Learn UI Design.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Spend about 10 \u2013 20 minutes now writing down five skills that you already have and could charge money for. Once you\u2019re done, congratulations \u2014 you now have 5 potential business ideas that you can grow into a flourishing side hustle.<\/p>\n<p>For now, just choose one business idea. It\u2019s okay, you can always change it later. For now, we\u2019re going to just try one out and try to find a client with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"client\"><strong>Step 5: Find your first client<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In order to start earning money, you need to find the people who will give you money for your ideas.<\/p>\n<p>But the question is\u2026how? Where do you find these people?<\/p>\n<p>One way to find potential clients is to start an email list. That\u2019s what Erik did after writing his piece on designing user interface, <a href=\"https:\/\/learnui.design\/blog\/7-rules-for-creating-gorgeous-ui-part-1.html\">\u201c7 Rules for Creating Gorgeous UI (Part 1).\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cBefore Learn UI Design, I had kept a blog for a few years, and if that experience taught me anything, it was the internet does not magically show up on your doorstep. Marketing is hard,\u201d Erik said. \u201cI didn&#8217;t actually have a newsletter, but over the next couple years, it collected almost 8,000 emails. By the time I finally built and launched my course, I had a whole bunch of folks ready to learn design! (Although, hilariously, I got a couple replies back &#8220;This looks amazing, but who are you again??&#8221;)\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Another way to find potential clients is to go online and find out where they live. Ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who is my client?<\/li>\n<li>Where do they go when they want to look for a solution to their problems?<\/li>\n<li>Where are they ALREADY looking for solutions to their problems?<\/li>\n<li>How can you connect them to your service?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this point, you\u2019re also going to want to niche down your market in order to really tailor your services and draw in customers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cStay in your niche,\u201d Shannon suggests. \u201cWe had a few instances where we veered from the niche and we paid for it dearly. It might feel cheesy to sit down and figure out what your target market is or what your goals are for the company, but you have to do that. All that legwork needs to be done upfront. It\u2019s just practical.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So think about who\u2019s an example of a client who might want to buy your product.<\/p>\n<p>A few questions to jumpstart your research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How old are they?<\/li>\n<li>Where do they live?<\/li>\n<li>What are their interests?<\/li>\n<li>How much do they make?<\/li>\n<li>What books do they read?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Using this information, find out what your clients <em>need<\/em>\u00a0by going to the places they go.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Want to pitch to moms that blog about children? Go to <u><a href=\"http:\/\/themomblogs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Mom Blogs<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and start with the ones under \u201cPopular Blogs.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Looking for physical or massage therapists within 50 miles of your house? <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yelp<\/a><\/u>\u00a0should get you started easily.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to do large dog grooming and sitting, well there\u2019s probably a local pet store or dog park near you where owners are all congregating just waiting for you to offer them a solution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are a few suggestions of some other great sites freelancers can use to find business online:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Writers: <\/strong><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MediaBistro.com<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/upwork.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Upwork.com<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/freelancewritinggigs.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FreelanceWritingGigs.com<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<li><strong>Illustrators\/Designers: <\/strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/99designs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">99designs.com<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.designs.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Designs.net<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<li><strong>Programmers: <\/strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toptal.com<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/jobs.smashingmagazine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SmashingMagazine.com<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"yourself\"><strong>Step 6: Invest again \u2014 but this time, in yourself<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Investing takes many shapes. It\u2019s not all stocks, bonds, and retirement accounts. Investing can also be in yourself \u2014 and it\u2019s something you need to do if you want to earn a million dollars. Be continually curious.<\/p>\n<p>From Erik:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI read pretty voraciously. Reading takes time, but if you learn the right lessons now, they pay dividends later. Many of the best books I\u2019ve found I read months or years before I actually used the lessons they taught.<\/p>\n<p>And while it&#8217;s not related to Learn UI Design directly, another great book-as-investment that&#8217;s helped me in freelancing and life is Chris Voss&#8217;s negotiation book &#8220;Never Split the Difference&#8221;, which cost me $18 and saved me $1797 within two months. That&#8217;s a 100x ROI on a book!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I love this.
