Reclining poolside drinking fruity beverages with umbrellas sticking out of them. Money, streaming into our bank account from our massively successful online business \u2014 without us having to lift a finger to make it appear there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background-color: #f5eee4; color: #000000;\">This, my friends, is the dream of\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/passive-income\/\">passive income<\/a><\/span>:\u00a0of creating a business that lets you make money while you sleep.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background-color: #f5eee4; color: #000000;\">It\u2019s a pretty picture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background-color: #f5eee4; color: #000000;\">It\u2019s also \u2014\u00a0and I\u2019m sorry to be the one to tell you this \u2014 a myth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background-color: #f5eee4; color: #000000;\">Let me explain.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-64d1d49 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"64d1d49\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What it really means to \u201cmake money while you sleep\u201d<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e639f5c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3e639f5c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The words \u201cpassive income\u201d get thrown around <em>a <\/em>lotin conversations about online business. It seems to be a thing that a lot of people are chasing: the promise of somehow, <em>someday<\/em>, being able to throw off the shackles of the humdrum 9-to-5 and be able to spend their time <em>how they want<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Exhibit A: This post in the Facebook group we run for students of our online course, <em>Zero to Launch<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><\/p>\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image1.png\" alt=\"image1\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><\/div><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong \u2014 it\u2019s a noble goal. And, if you\u2019re smart and you find the right idea and build it in the right way, it IS achievable.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But when I see too many prospective online business owners going dreamy-eyed at the prospect of passive income, I start to worry.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I worry that they may be starting an online business for the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Even worse: I worry that, when the reality of starting an online business doesn\u2019t match up to the fairy tale they\u2019ve created in their head, they <a href=\"https:\/\/smallbiztrends.com\/2016\/11\/startup-statistics-small-business.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">may wind up quitting<\/a>\u00a0before they even see whether they and their business have what it takes to go the distance.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>So in this post, I want to have an honest conversation about passive income \u2014 what it <em>actually <\/em>means to make money while you sleep, and what it takes to get there. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with point #1:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.f1u1w948ym87\">Real talk #1: Making money while you sleep takes A LOT of work while you\u2019re awake<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The first thing to understand about \u201cmaking money while you sleep\u201d is that it doesn\u2019t mean that you <em>never <\/em>have to spend time working.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>What it means is that the relationship between the amount of time you spend working and the amount of money you earn from that work changes.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how it works in most typical work setups:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You go into an office.<\/li>\n<li>You give your employer 40-60 hours of your life each week.<\/li>\n<li>Your boss pays you a set amount of money in exchange for your time and your talent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In other words: there\u2019s <strong>a 1:1 relationship<\/strong>\u00a0between the amount of time you <em>spend<\/em>\u00a0and the amount of money you\u2019re able to earn. There\u2019s also a limit to how<em>\u00a0much<\/em>\u00a0money you can earn for your time, since most jobs have pretty finite ceilings when it comes to how much they can earn.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>When you make the decision to start a business and start building products,<strong>\u00a0that 1:1 correlation between time spent and money earned <\/strong><strong>disappears.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>And sure, on the one hand, that means you can achieve <em>amazing <\/em>results like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/how-to-make-100000-in-a-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earning $100,000 in a single day<\/a>, or earning money from a product that you made years ago but have long since ceased to promote.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>And yes, some of this money will come in while you\u2019re asleep \u2014 or out to lunch, or at the gym \u2014 and <em>not <\/em>while you\u2019re slaving over a hot computer in a crappy open office.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s talk about what it takes to <em>get <\/em>to that point \u2014 to the $100,000 launch, for example.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Before you can launch that product, you\u2019ve got:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Market research<\/li>\n<li>Getting to know your customers<\/li>\n<li>Building a website<\/li>\n<li>Growing your audience<\/li>\n<li>Creating content<\/li>\n<li>Packaging that content together into a product<\/li>\n<li>Testing that product to make sure it works<\/li>\n<li>Writing the sales page<\/li>\n<li>Writing the emails that <em>send <\/em>people <em>to <\/em>the sales page<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>By the time you get to launch day, you\u2019ll have poured hundreds, possibly even <em>thousands <\/em>of hours of your life into building that product \u2014 without earning a <em>cent <\/em>from any of it.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>So when you <em>do <\/em>get to the point where you have tens of thousands of subscribers and you run that launch that earns six figures in a matter of hours \u2014 you\u2019re not actually making money out of thin air.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>What you\u2019re actually doing is <em>paying <\/em>yourself back for all the time that <em>you already spent.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing \u201cpassive\u201d about that.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.orqef5ksgnvy\">Real talk #2: Making money while you sleep doesn\u2019t happen overnight<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Another, related thing to realize about building a business that lets you earn money while you sleep is that it doesn\u2019t happen overnight.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve talked to dozens of entrepreneurs about how they started and grew their online business. And the theme that emerges time and time again: <strong>starting and growing a business takes time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It took Shirag Shemmassian <strong>four years<\/strong>\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/how-i-doubled-my-revenue-to-400k-by-doing-less\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grow his company into a six-figure business<\/a>. That entire time, and even for a while after, he was holding down a full-time job in addition to working on the business.<\/li>\n<li>Sam Gavis Hughson has been working on his business for more than <strong>two-and-a-half years<\/strong>, and after a <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/breakthrough-launch-sam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">series of personal-best launches<\/a>\u00a0last year, he\u2019s confident that <em>THIS<\/em>\u00a0year the business will bring in enough money\u00a0that he can stop dipping into savings and support himself full-time.<\/li>\n<li>Laura Long grew her business in 18 months \u2014 but the first $77K that her business earned didn\u2019t go to her. It went to paying off her student loans. Now that that\u2019s done, she\u2019s finally able to invest money back into her business and see where she can take it from here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the thing: <strong>they all knew that going in<\/strong>. They knew that the early stages of starting their business would be slow going. They knew the rewards wouldn\u2019t be obvious right away. But they <em>also <\/em>knew that having the patience and the grit to slug it out, even when it was hard and boring and the way forward wasn\u2019t clear \u2014 that determination was what would <em>get<\/em>\u00a0them to the prize in the long term.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Paradoxically, not <em>needing <\/em>their business to be successful right away is what is keeping them on the path to success long term.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.sq0kwb8fmhrh\">Real talk #3: Passive income is not the only way to build a successful business<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another place aspiring online business owners tend to get tripped up by the idea of passive income.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>They become so enamored with the idea of that truly <em>passive<\/em>\u00a0product \u2014 the online course or e-book that, once built, earns money without them having to lift a finger \u2014 they miss out on a whole other range of <em>amazing <\/em>business ideas that, just maybe, are the businesses they <em>should <\/em>be building in the first place.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Plenty of successful entrepreneurs have built <em>massively<\/em>\u00a0successful online businesses based around service-based business models, like coaching and consulting.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In fact, a few of them have talked about it with us:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sarah Jones explained her decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/why-i-gave-up-passive-income-and-took-my-products-off-the-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walk away from passive income<\/a>\u00a0after realizing courses weren\u2019t actually the best way to serve her audience. Her online business, Introverted Alpha, is a six-figure business \u2014 but it\u2019s a six-figure business that\u2019s built around <em>services<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Benji Hyam told the story of how he and his cofounder\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/growthlab.com\/turned-failed-product-business-34000month-service-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passive income product<\/a>\u00a0actually <em>failed \u2014 <\/em>but then they used that as the foundation for a $30,000\/month service business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I want to put this in bold, because it\u2019s that important: <strong>passive-income products are not the only way to build a successful online business. <\/strong>If you\u2019re so myopically focused on the dream of the passive income product that you miss out on the <em>incredible <\/em>service-based business idea that\u2019s right in front of you, you really are missing the forest for the trees.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.46u4q3xoespj\">Real talk #4: Just because you\u2019re making money while you sleep doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ll want to quit your business<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s one final question I\u2019d like to pose.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you <em>do <\/em>reach that promised land of the passive-income business that earns you money literally while you sleep.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say that business brings in enough money for you to comfortably live on without you having to keep working on it.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>What makes you so sure that you\u2019ll <\/strong><strong>want <\/strong><strong>to stop working, even IF you could?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>By the time you\u2019ve built your business to a point where it\u2019s earning enough that you <em>could <\/em>hypothetically walk away, you\u2019ll have invested so much of your time and so much of yourself into building it, you may just find yourself realizing:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Actually, walking away is the <em>last <\/em>thing you want to do. What you <em>actually <\/em><strong>want to do is keep building, keep growing, keep seeing how much further you could go.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.tj1tc5j2tgla\">Making passive income requires some very active choices<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Passive income is a great goal to have in mind when you\u2019re starting an online business. But it\u2019s not the only goal \u2014 and getting there is not as straightforward as you might think.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>People tend to think of starting a business like winning the lottery. It\u2019s just a matter of getting lucky.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But starting a business isn\u2019t winning the lottery. It\u2019s an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/income-producing-assets\/\">investment<\/a>. There\u2019s luck involved, sure \u2014 things have to go your way. But way more important than luck is the work that you put in.
