When I was a student at Stanford, I did some work for a local venture capital firm. After a few months, I decided that I would ask my boss for a promotion\u2014after all, I\u2019m a smart guy and I\u2019ve been working pretty hard, so I should ask, right?<\/p>\n<p>The conversation went something like this:<\/p>\n<p><b>Ramit:<\/b>\u00a0\u201cHi Boss, thanks for meeting with me. So, I\u2019ve been working here for a few months now, and I think I\u2019ve been doing a really good job. I\u2019ve gotten a good understanding of the ins and outs of the business, and because of that, I\u2019d like to discuss with you the possibility of a promotion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Boss:<\/b>\u00a0\u201cWhy do you think I should give you a promotion?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Ramit:<\/b>\u00a0\u201cWell, you know, as I mentioned, I think I\u2019ve been doing a really good job, and I\u2019ve been learning a lot about the company and how everything works here and\u2026 yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Boss:<\/b>\u00a0\u201cNo. Not gonna happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t pretty. And I was mad at my boss for two days (he said \u201cNO!!\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>But then I realized I was being ridiculous. I hadn\u2019t given him any legitimate reasons why he should give me more responsibility and pay me more. So why would I have expected him to?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve gotten a lot\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/salary-negotiation\/\">better at negotiation<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0since then, and this is the #1 rule I\u2019ve discovered about negotiation:<\/p>\n<p><b>80% of the work in a negotiation is done before you ever walk into the room.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>That means the conversation is only a small fraction of\u00a0<i>what actually makes or breaks the negotiation<\/i>. If you\u2019re skeptical of your value, your boss will instantly ferret it out, costing you thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0<i>is<\/i>\u00a0possible to demonstrate massive, tremendous value in three months\u2014even as a new graduate. If they are, you did something wrong, and your chances for success drop dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Think about it: If you simply blindside your boss, you\u2019re putting him or her on the spot.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody likes being cornered, especially regarding money and promotions. Their natural reaction will be to become defensive. Ask them what you would have to do to get a raise, and make them get specific. Pull from the conversation you already had with your boss where they told you what you\u2019d need to do to get a promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, you will bring the proposal with you when you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/salary-negotiation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>negotiate your salary<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Actually doing it\u2014live and under pressure\u2014is another experience altogether. The only solution is practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazingly, most people never do this. They simply consume information and think, \u201cYeah, yeah, I got it,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019ll do it later.\u201d But they never follow through. Yet as little as one to two hours of practice could mean the difference between success and failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how to do it: First, sit in front of a video camera, either alone or with a friend. Then brainstorm as many different potential scenarios as possible and practice your responses live and out loud, just as you would in front of your boss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, you might practice what you\u2019d say if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your boss acts surprised or annoyed when you bring up salary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your boss asks you to <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/how-much-raise\/\">name a number first<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He tries to turn you down with excuses like \u201cIt\u2019s the economy,\u201d or \u201cEveryone else is getting the same thing.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, observe (or have a friend give feedback on) the following, and practice until perfect:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your words<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They should be compelling, concise, and free of rambling sentences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your body language. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to be sitting up, leaning forward, and relaxed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your tone.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It should be professional, positive, and energetic.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This works. I know because I used to suck in interviews and negotiations. I had no idea how to ask for a raise or promotion, but then I started practicing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was in high school, I had trouble landing any scholarships, even though I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thought<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I was acing the in-person interviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t until I recorded myself practicing on video that I realized the problem: I never smiled. I seemed stern and unfriendly.
