Would you agree with any of these statements?<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m busier than most people\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhenever I try to manage my time, something comes up to ruin the whole system\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019ve tried time management software and apps, but they never work\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>We like to think we\u2019re special snowflakes when it comes to time management, but the truth is, almost EVERYONE can relate to most of the quotes above.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>So how is it that some people seem to get a gargantuan amount of things accomplished\u2026 while the rest of us struggle just to get through the day?<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>TRUTH #1:<\/strong> We all have the same amount of time. Some just manage their time better.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>TRUTH #2:<\/strong> Time management isn\u2019t about super-secret tactics or fancy apps. And move on<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of my students have used these exact systems. Doing one of the 5 can save you hours each week. All 5 could save you at least 10 hours per week.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Think about that. That\u2019s over 40 hours each and every month (an entire workweek of time!).<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>I recommend you start with the one that you find most impactful and work your way through the list over the coming weeks. Then watch the overwhelm disappear.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"system1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-tip-1-make-it-stupid-easy-to-say-no\">Tip 1: Make it stupid easy to say \u201cNo\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>How many times this month have your friends (or even you!) said something like\u2026<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cSorry, something came up. I\u2019ll catch you next time\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI don\u2019t know if I can do that. I\u2019m just so swamped at work, you know?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m too busy to do that right now. I\u2019ll get to it later\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>All of us \u2014 CEOs, politicians, Ph.D candidates, mothers of 2 \u2014 have the same 24 hours in a day. It\u2019s OK to recognize when \u201cno time\u201d is actually a blanket excuse for not doing something you don\u2019t want to do.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>When you find yourself saying any of the phrases above, stop and evaluate why.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s not a priority for you right now. Maybe you just really don\u2019t want to do it. Both of these thoughts are perfectly fine. We\u2019ll save everyone a lot of time and effort by recognizing (and acting on) what\u2019s really going on.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>ACTION STEP:<\/strong> The next time someone offers you an invitation, instead of saying \u201cI don\u2019t have time,\u201d be honest with them and yourself. You can even use this exact script: \u201cThat sounds really interesting, but I\u2019m going to pass so I can focus on a couple other things I really want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>This will:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list {\"ordered\":true} --><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make others value your time and commitments<\/li>\n<li>Force you to be honest with yourself about what\u2019s important<\/li>\n<li>Free up your mental energy to worry about things you actually care about<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"system2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-tip-2-purge-the-tiny-time-sucks\">Tip 2: Purge the tiny time-sucks<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>We all face daily annoyances in our lives that are so tiny, they\u2019re almost embarrassing to talk about.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oh god, I have to wrap my hair dryer up and put it in the medicine cabinet?<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t have enough hangers for my coat, so I have to store them in two separate closets. Waahh\u2026.<\/li>\n<li>My garbage can is kind of ugly. Also, I hate having to bend over, shove it back in, and fiddle around with it to close the cabinet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>But these minor annoyances add up. It\u2019s like going to the beach and walking into a swarm of mosquitoes. One isn\u2019t so bad, but if you\u2019re getting bitten by a hundred of them, you have a serious problem.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>We keep putting up with these distractions day after day, not recognizing the invisible cost of each individual annoyance. We never make the connection between these 50 tiny inconveniences\u2026 and the BIG things that we always seem too tired to do.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>But those little annoyances are like motivation mosquitoes. They suck you dry one bite at a time.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>We say, \u201cI need motivation,\u201d but we already have enough. The problem is we\u2019re spending it, one ounce at a time, on tiny BS problems.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>ACTION STEP:<\/strong> Make a list of every tiny annoyance in your day (here\u2019s mine).<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maybe you only have 2 coffee mugs, so you have to wash one every morning<\/li>\n<li>Maybe you need a new shower curtain, but last time you went to Target, they were all sold out<\/li>\n<li>Maybe half your pants are in your closet and half are in your drawer, so you have to go back and forth every morning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not shallow to want to have a smooth day. In fact, top performers go <em>out of their way<\/em> to recognize these motivation mosquitoes \u2014 those tiny annoyances that drain your mental reservoir \u2014 and purge with prejudice.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Now, my favorite part!<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>One-by-one, schedule in time to fix each of them. Put an actual appointment on your calendar to order a new curtain, organize your dresser, or shop for cool new mugs.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Then put a recurring item on your calendar to identify your new time-sucking annoyances and get rid of them every quarter. I pulled up my calendar and showed him exactly how I run my life: <em>If it\u2019s not on my calendar, it doesn\u2019t exist<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:image --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/calendar.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Look at this one item:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:image --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/to-do.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>This is a random to-do that I would normally put in the back of my head\u2026 and it would never get done. Instead, I added it to my calendar so it always gets done.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>ACTION STEP:<\/strong> Stop putting things on your \u201cto-do\u201d list. Instead, schedule actual time for them. Here are a few real items from my calendar:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call cable company<\/li>\n<li>Clean stupid box of papers<\/li>\n<li>Mail letter to friend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Advanced tip:<\/strong> You can set up weekly, monthly, and quarterly \u201cto-dos\u201d for there are reviewing your systems, planning an annual negotiation, or even checking in on your relationship.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"system4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-tip-4-get-information-out-of-your-brain-and-into-action\">Tip 4: Get information out of your brain and into action<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Now I want to show you a simple system I use that helps me stay extremely productive. I call it the Iceberg Method.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>I decided to share the Iceberg Method once I got this question from an IWT reader:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:quote --><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI read a lot of influential things every day from people like you, Tim Ferriss, Ryan Holiday, etc. All of the topics you discuss and people you link are insightful and usually have a great deal of value and takeaways. However, even when distilling it down to bullet points on pieces of paper, it can all still be a lot to take in (that\u2019s how much value there is!), and often it\u2019s easy to forget some or all of it. Tag these emails and file them away so they are out of your brain and you don\u2019t waste mental energy each day reviewing them.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"system5\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-tip-5-make-a-decision-and-move-on\">Tip 5: Make a decision. And move on<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Recently, one of my students in my Brain Trust group asked me which book she should read first \u2014 X or Y.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Look at my response:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:image --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/time-management-bt.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Stop wasting time deliberating minor decisions. Stop agonizing over optimizing small decisions that will have no meaningful impact on your life. Pick something &#8212; and move on.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In other words, BE DECISIVE!<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to be a control freak. (I say that as someone who used to be one\u2026 and still is in certain areas of life.)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>But then you create massive to-do lists, become the bottleneck to your co-workers and family, and set yourself up to be the martyr because \u201cnobody else can do it like I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s actually harder to take a hard look at yourself and admit: \u201cI\u2019m a cognitive miser \u2014 I have limited attention and willpower. So I\u2019m going to spend my limited time focusing on things that really matter. And I\u2019m going to make a decision &#8212; ANY decision when it comes to the things that don\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>This took me years and years to really \u201cget.\u201d And beneath it all is the very real problem of perfectionism. I realized I could spend all the time in the world to make \u201cperfect\u201d decisions\u2026 or I could actually have an impact on the world by focusing on things that matter.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>This is liberating. It means most of the decisions I used to worry about don\u2019t matter. So I pick something and move on \u2014 so I can focus on the decisions that do matter.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>ACTION STEP:<\/strong> Make a decision you can stick to when it comes to something you shouldn\u2019t be wasting time deliberating. For example:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>President Obama wears the same suit every day<\/li>\n<li>I made a list of restaurants and coffee shops I like, and if I\u2019m having a business meeting, I always meet at 1 of the same 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m willing to bet you deliberate over decisions that actually make no difference at all. Do you spend time researching airline fares to save $50? Do you open 15 tabs on the different types of underwear to buy?<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s an area of life where you\u2019ve deliberated way, way too much?
