Now normally, when I order coffee, I just say, \u201cHey, I\u2019ll have a latte. Thank you,\u201d before going on my way.<\/p>\n<p>But when my buddy went up to order his coffee, he had four people around him absolutely cracking up within seconds.\u00a0The barista was smiling. People around him were laughing. And everyone seemed to just really enjoy his presence.<\/p>\n<p>And guess what he said that got all this going. It was, \u201cWhat\u2019s good today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it! From that one line he was able to start a great conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Now I want you to check out the rest of his conversation \u2014 and see what you notice:<\/p>\n<p><strong>MY FRIEND:<\/strong>\u00a0What\u2019s good today?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BARISTA:<\/strong>\u00a0(smiling) Everything is good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MY FRIEND:<\/strong>\u00a0(teasing) Everything isn\u2019t good. Tell me the truth!<\/p>\n<p><strong>BARISTA:<\/strong>\u00a0Well, we just got a new cold-pressed coffee machine and I hear that\u2019s supposed to be good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MY FRIEND:<\/strong>\u00a0No, I mean what would YOU get if you could get anything?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BARISTA:<\/strong>\u00a0(laughs) I actually think that our scones are the best things ever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MY FRIEND:<\/strong>\u00a0Well, I\u2019ll have two of those please!<\/p>\n<p>A few takeaways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>He\u2019s just saying normal things.<\/strong>\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0no magic line or canned jokes here. My friend was just saying simple things that, on their face, aren\u2019t very clever\u2026but none of that mattered!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>He had a lot of energy.<\/strong>\u00a0The way my friend said things was way more important than\u00a0<em>what<\/em>\u00a0he said.\u00a0If he went into this situation with low energy and delivered everything in a monotone voice, he would not have gotten the same positive effect.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>The cashier LOVED this.<\/strong>\u00a0She spends all day listening to those aforementioned monotone voices order the same thing over and over. Finally, she got someone who broke that monotony and made her smile. My friend brightened her day and was memorable.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My friend did all this by leveraging a system called the \u201cPerfect Words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What are the Perfect Words? I\u2019m Ramit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Good morning. How are you?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These three simple phrases have no \u201cmagic\u201d to them \u2014 and yet they\u2019ve worked millions of times since the dawn of conversation openers.<\/p>\n<p>What I want you to do now is start to consider the different ways you can\u00a0<em>deliver<\/em>\u00a0these phrases. Enhancing your communication skills is crucial here, as it&#8217;s not just about what you say but how you convey it. Effective communication skills, including digital communication, are essential in preventing misunderstandings and misconceptions. They also play a significant role in both public speaking and casual conversations, requiring practice to master the art of delivering your message effectively.<\/p>\n<p>While you\u2019re working on your phrases, here are some more tips to help you tap into the secret habits of successful people:<\/p>\n<p>Here are three simple ways you can do that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Smiling.<\/strong>\u00a0Many of us don\u2019t typically smile\u00a0when\u00a0we\u2019re opening a conversation. We\u2019ll say things like, \u201cHi, how\u2019s your morning going?\u201d and deliver it like we\u2019re a doctor giving bad news. But when we DO smile, it\u2019s the instant ice breaker. And it\u2019s so simple to do. So\u00a0practice letting your smile \u201cfill your face.\u201d I used to videotape myself speaking to find out I wasn\u2019t smiling enough. It gets easier once you start practicing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Slow down.<\/strong>\u00a0The speed in which we say something can have a huge effect on how people perceive us. When we\u2019re nervous, we tend to speed up the way we talk. When we slow down though, it gives people time to connect with you. Couple that with a good smile and you got a winning system. So try slowing down what you\u2019re saying by 50%. It will feel sluggish, but this is perfect for everyone else. It helps to enunciate your words too. Young Ramit got way ahead using this one tip.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Change your tone.<\/strong>\u00a0Way back in the day, I had no tonality whatsoever when I talked. I\u2019m sure you could close your eyes and not tell if you were conversing with me or Ben Stein. Eventually I realized this, so I started to speak with more energy \u2014 and it did WONDERS. Try taking whatever level you\u2019re at when you normally talk, and add 50% more energy into your voice. What feels weird to you is NORMAL to everyone else.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8c6e186 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8c6e186\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Action step: Implement the Perfect Words 3x\/day for a week\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-170fc84 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"170fc84\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div data-pm-slice=\"2 2 []\">\n<p>I want you to use the three phrases above every day for seven days on different strangers. It can be your Amazon Prime delivery guy, your barista, the checkout lady at the grocery store, whoever!<\/p>\n<p>As you use the phrases though, keep in mind the different ways you can change up how you deliver your words (smiling, slowing down, and changing your tone).<\/p>\n<p>A few other things to remember<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>They\u2019re called social \u201cskills,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and like any skill, you can get\u00a0<em>better<\/em>\u00a0at them. We\u2019re starting small on purpose. As you get more used to it, you can start to scale and open conversations with more people.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Most people you talk to are bored all day long.<\/strong>\u00a0This means you\u2019ll be doing them a favor by engaging with them just like my friend was with the cashier at the coffee shop.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Note their reactions and your reactions.<\/strong>\u00a0Did the person you\u2019re talking to start smiling and laughing because of your energy? Or did they retreat because you made them uncomfortable? How did you feel while you were smiling or talking slowly?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry if this doesn\u2019t feel comfortable right away. It\u2019s not supposed to. Just trust the system. It doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re with friends or if you\u2019re trying to sell a product. Including follow-up questions in your Question Toolbox can show genuine interest and keep the conversation flowing, as these types of questions are essential for demonstrating that you&#8217;re listening and truly engaged in the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, depending on the context of your conversation, you\u2019re going to want to have different questions for different scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>I remember once, my friend noticed me checking this girl out at a bar, so he goaded me into talking to her.
