It sucks, right? Too often I have people asking me how to handle situations like these:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should they pander to the other person\u2019s opinion?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should they stop being honest all together?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to communicate more effectively, then the right answer is none of the above!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a middle ground between these two extremes that you can learn to distinguish, and I\u2019ll show you how in this post.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0859d46 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default qodef-elementor-content-no\" data-id=\"0859d46\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9811917\" data-id=\"9811917\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d2d4771 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d2d4771\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Be more empathetic towards others\u2019 feelings<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-006593c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"006593c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be well liked means being able to put yourself in another\u2019s shoes &#8211;\u00a0 knowing that is one thing, but doing it is a whole different beast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s one simple strategy you can use to start appearing more empathetic in your conversations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick one person in your friend group who is universally liked. This person will serve to be your communications mentor. I want you to watch carefully how they respond to questions. If someone comes up to them complaining about their relationship or their weight, listen closely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What questions do they ask?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do they try to give advice, or do they make statements of empathy?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are they doing most of the talking, or mainly listening?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll find that their response differs greatly from how you would respond in that situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you\u2019ve studied them, try to modulate yourself. The next time someone baits you with something like \u201cOh, I really need to go to the gym\u201d, don\u2019t just blurt out the first thing that comes to mind (trust me, I can appreciate how hard this is).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a second and think about how your friend would respond. And then give that response. Over time, you\u2019ll end up changing your internal psychology as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s an example of how to be more empathetic, in a scenario where a colleague, Sarah, is upset because her project proposal was rejected:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-083e8f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"083e8f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cHey Sarah, I noticed you\u2019re looking a bit down. I understand you\u2019re feeling disappointed about the proposal. Can you tell me more about what\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sarah:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cYeah, I put a lot of work into it, and it just feels like it was all for nothing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt sounds like you\u2019re really frustrated and upset about this. That must be tough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sarah:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cExactly. I just don\u2019t know what to do now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI can see why you\u2019d feel that way. It\u2019s completely understandable given the situation. I\u2019m here for you. Is there anything I can do to help?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sarah:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThanks. Just talking about it helps, actually.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI totally understand, how you\u2019re feeling about it is valid and important. (interrupts) You shouldn\u2019t feel that way. It\u2019s not a big deal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sarah:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cBut I really thought it would be accepted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI went through something similar last month, and I handled it by pushing harder on the next project. What you need to do is just focus on the next opportunity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sarah:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI guess, but it still feels really discouraging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cYou\u2019re overreacting. They\u2019re well aware of their problem. If someone is 50lbs overweight, I promise you they are already aware that they have an issue with diet and exercise. The last thing they need is for you to start informing them on what they should change in their life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The key to doing this is to be more sensitive.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know what you\u2019re thinking, \u201cRamit, out of all people how are YOU telling me to be more sensitive?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen, this is my blog so I can call myself sensitive if I want to. The point is, you need to have a bit more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/basics\/empathy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empathy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you want people to like you. If you\u2019re unwilling to do that, then you should just make peace with the fact that people won\u2019t like you too much.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to tell people where they messed up comes across as insensitive and it leaves them with the feeling that you don\u2019t have any appreciation for their situation. Once you internalize the need for sensitivity, you can move on to what you should actually do to improve your communication.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s an example of how not giving more information can make you a better listener: <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5d0903 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c5d0903\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Lisa:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI can\u2019t believe my boss assigned me yet another project with an impossible deadline. It\u2019s like he thinks I have no other work to do!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThat sounds really frustrating, Lisa. I can see why you\u2019re upset.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Lisa:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cExactly! And then when I try to explain how much I already have on my plate, he just brushes it off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI understand how that would make you feel unheard and undervalued. It must be really stressful for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Lisa:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt is! Thanks for listening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI\u2019m here for you. That\u2019s what I did, and it kind of helped. Also, you should consider talking to HR about it. They might be able to mediate. And you know, you could also try setting stricter boundaries with your time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Lisa:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI guess, but\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cAnd make sure you take breaks so you don\u2019t burn out. By the way, have you tried using a project management tool to organize your tasks? Like many people, I too used to be the guy who was too honest with people. I thought my honest and blunt communication style was harmless, even helpful at times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But people REALLY didn\u2019t like it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember it like it was yesterday. Someone would tell me how they just got their 5th overdraft fee from their bank, and look to me to make a statement of empathy, only to be shocked by hearing me say, \u201cwell, maybe you should take more responsibility for your financial life\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you believe I was surprised that people were offended by that?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s why my words weren\u2019t received well\u2013because I was being an asshole. Only people who have zero social acuity think you either have to be 100% honest or lie in a conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s what the psychology field calls an extreme reach barrier\u2013the assumption that if you want to do something, you have to go to the COMPLETE EXTREME to do it at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not offending people during conversation isn\u2019t as simple as lying or being honest.
