If you\u2019re writing something you truly love, you\u2019re going to get real people who follow you, comment on your material, and share it &#8212; which builds even more authority. On the flip side, if you don\u2019t particularly like a topic, it\u2019ll quickly surface in your writing. I can tell when I wrote something boring or flat because my readers are bored, too!<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Still not sure? Think about what your close friends and family talk to you about. What do they ask for your advice on? Do your vegan recipes on Instagram get the most engagement? Let these answers guide your blog focus. Don\u2019t worry if others have already written about the topic. It\u2019s a big, brash promise &#8212; and if I\u2019ve done my job, it delivers.<\/p>\n<p>I would never call it \u201cPersonal Finance Management.\u201d It\u2019s boring and it sounds like everyone else! Use these ideas as you think of your own blog name.<\/p>\n<p>Finding a name for your blog might seem intimidating at first, but don\u2019t overthink it. Here are some tips to remember when you\u2019re brainstorming your blog name:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose words related to your niche<\/li>\n<li>Keep it simple and stick to one or two words (ideally)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Don\u2019t pick overly general terms like \u201ctravel\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Dotcom domains are preferred<\/li>\n<li>Avoid hyphens or numbers<\/li>\n<li>For a personal blog or branding, consider using a variation of your name<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can keep your domain name as long as you continue to pay your annual fees, which typically run $10 to $15 per year.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"choose-web-host\"><strong>Step 3: Choose Your Web Host<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So, you\u2019ve chosen a niche around perfecting the art of macram\u00e9 on a budget and named it. Now, what? The next step is to select your web host.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Web hosting<\/strong> is a service that makes your blog accessible through the web \u2013 it has a significant impact on your site\u2019s overall functionality and its performance.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a vast array of web hosts to choose from at all price points, from a few dollars to thousands. Above all, a good web host will walk you through setting up and launching your blog.<\/p>\n<h3>Hosted vs. Self-Hosted<\/h3>\n<p>You have two options here: <strong>hosted<\/strong> (Blogger, WordPress.com) and <strong>self-hosted<\/strong> (WordPress.org). \u201cHosted\u201d blogging platforms, like Wix or Squarespace, offer a hands-off approach to your blog. You deal with one company, and all of your content and files live on the blog platform\u2019s servers. These platforms manage data and web hosting, so you don\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, hosted platforms can be limiting and slow down the growth of your blog. Some might even put restrictions on how much money you can make from your content. Or you might be prohibited from monetizing at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSelf-hosted\u201d platforms require you to install blogging software on your own web server.<\/p>\n<p>Self-hosted platforms like WordPress.org allow you to set up and maintain your blog with a unique domain and web hosting. If you want to sell products, sell a service, or run ads, this is the right choice.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably heard of WordPress\u2019s blogging platform already, and there\u2019s a reason for that \u2013 it\u2019s easy to use and powerful. WordPress also delivers tons of free plugins you can leverage to customize and optimize your blog. My suggestion: Use WordPress.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"secure-your-blog\"><strong>Step 4: Protect and Secure Your Blog\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>New bloggers may not realize they should protect their blog by doing some basic security housekeeping tasks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Backup Your Blog<\/h3>\n<p>Backing up your blog should be one of the first things you do after setting up your blog. While it\u2019s rare that a web host will lose or delete your site, it can still happen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But your site suddenly disappearing isn\u2019t the biggest threat to your blog \u2014 hackers are.<\/p>\n<p>Hackers and other cybercriminals can infect your site with malicious code.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the worst-case scenario occurs, but you have a backup of your blog available, you can restore a clean version of your website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Be Careful With Copyrights<\/h3>\n<p>Copyrights need to be respected, especially when it comes to the visual elements of your blog.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Small-time bloggers are often the victims of what is called \u201cCopyright Trolls.\u201d Well-meaning bloggers might accidentally use copyrighted images to add visual interest to their content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Copyright lawyers can sue you for damages based on the use of a copyrighted image, even if the lawyer doesn\u2019t own the copyright or represent the entity with the copyright. As a result, bloggers can be bilked out of money.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How do you avoid this? <em>Never<\/em> use copyrighted images for your blog posts. If you\u2019re not sure, it\u2019s better to be safe than sorry and choose an image you\u2019re confident that you can use.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s actually very easy to find images available for free through the public domain or free stock photo sites. If you\u2019re working on a WordPress site, look for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpbeginner.com\/showcase\/best-responsive-wordpress-themes\/\">themes <\/a>that say &#8220;SEO optimized&#8221;, &#8220;responsive&#8221; or &#8220;fast loading&#8221; themes.<\/p>\n<p>Many free themes can make sites look odd when viewed on a mobile device, or make for increased page speed (aka the time it takes a page to properly load). For users on sites like squarespace or Wix, you shouldn&#8217;t have to worry about these potential issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re starting an urban photography blog, a theme emphasizing visuals is preferable to text-oriented themes.<\/p>\n<p>To get more relevant results, you can apply filters while searching for themes like designs based around your blog subject, for instance.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"basic-blog-pages\"><strong>Step 6: Add Basic Blog Pages<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before you start posting regularly, it\u2019s smart to add a few basic, standard pages to your blog to boost your website\u2019s credibility.<\/p>\n<h3>Create an \u201cAbout Me\u201d Page<\/h3>\n<p>Your \u201cAbout Me\u201d page should explain who you are and the focus of your blog.
