It\u2019s your foot in the door and a critical part of the interviewing process. It acts as a screening interview to narrow down the candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-how-to-prepare-for-a-phone-interview\">How to prepare for a phone interview<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>You may think it\u2019s simply making sure your phone is loud enough to hear it over reruns of Friends as you contemplate changing out of your pajamas into fresh pajamas. But if you really want that job, you&#8217;ll want to take it as seriously as any in-person interview. These are our top phone interview tips.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-1-prepare-for-what-you-need\">1. Prepare for what you need\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a compulsive list-maker, eat your heart out because this is your time to shine, baby! List everything that you\u2019ll need during your interview slot:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your phone\u00a0&#8211; Make sure the phone is charged and have the charger handy just in case.<\/li>\n<li>A quiet place\u00a0&#8211; No bustling coffee shops or your kitchen when everyone is home for the day. Choose a quiet space that allows you to focus on the interview. It\u2019s also important in terms of professionalism. If you\u2019re in a chaotic environment, it might make your interviewer feel like you didn\u2019t prioritize the meeting enough for you to seek out a quiet spot.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A notepad and pen\u00a0&#8211; Hopefully you\u2019re going to ask some questions, even if it\u2019s just to build rapport with the interviewer. Keep those notes so you can do a follow-up, or better yet, provide feedback when you land the in-person interview.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your notes<\/strong> &#8211; Having your notes on-hand is kind of like taking an open book exam. You don&#8217;t get any award for not using notes! You\u2019ll know exactly what to do in a phone interview, which takes some pressure off the interview.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-2-prepare-yourself\">2. Prepare yourself<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Business at the top and party at the bottom might help\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/video-interview-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">save face during video interviews<\/a>, but it does nothing for your confidence. Shower, do your hair, do makeup (if that&#8217;s you), and get dressed as if you\u2019re going for the in-person interview.<\/p>\n<p>At the very least, get out of those pjs and wear some grown-up shoes. Who knows, this might switch over to a video screen interview without warning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-3-prepare-your-responses\">3. Prepare your responses\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Knowing what to say during the actual interview will rely a lot on your level of preparedness. Recruiters often post some questions along with the job offer, and those questions give you insight into the topics up for discussion during the interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/ace-job-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research the company<\/a>:\u00a0Use resources such as Linkedin, Glassdoor, and Indeed to do research on your potential future employer. This allows you to get a feel for the company structure but also gives you an idea of the scope of growth in your chosen field. You also want to see if there are gaps that you can help them fill, but more on that later.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Research the interviewer:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/how-to-prepare-for-an-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">If the interviewer\u2019s name is provided<\/a>, you can do a quick search to find out where they are in the structure of the organization. This gives you an idea of whether the interview is being conducted by HR, or your next line manager. You\u2019ll also get an idea of their personality and interests. Just be sure to keep the info to yourself, as you don\u2019t want to give off creepy vibes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Get your story toolbox ready:\u00a0Interviews generally follow the same scripts, mostly because all interviewers want to know one thing, and that is, \u201cWhat makes you a better choice than any of the other guys out there?\u201d They want to know why you\u2019re the best fit for the job. Your story toolbox allows you to answer some of the more difficult questions, such as \u201cTell me about yourself\u201d and \u201cWhat about this job appeals to you?\u201d By preparing stories that match that line of questioning, you\u2019ll be ready with a response they want to hear, and you won\u2019t waste time rambling.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-4-know-what-you-want-from-the-interview\">4. Practicing allows you to plan out the interview and make adjustments as you go along. You\u2019ll be surprised how many strange quirks you might have, for instance, constantly clearing your throat or saying \u201cum\u201d all the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-use-the-mirror\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; vertical-align: baseline;\">Use the mirror\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: baseline;\">This may seem like a bizarre tip, but hey, trust us. When you practice your scripts in the mirror, you immediately start making subtle changes such as changing your posture, fixing your hair, and possibly even smiling. These are all little efforts to boost your confidence and shouldn\u2019t be taken lightly. Start telling yourself that this is going to be a fun interview, even if you need to be professional and alert. Standing also boosts confidence, by the way, and who doesn\u2019t need an extra boost?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-watch-your-breathing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; vertical-align: baseline;\">Watch your breathing\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: baseline;\">Breathe. Focus on measured breathing but make sure it doesn\u2019t sound like you\u2019ve just run a marathon on the other side. Steady breathing also does wonders for circulation, which is needed when you\u2019re cornered with the OG of questions,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/tell-me-about-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"vertical-align: baseline;\">\u201cSo tell me about yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: baseline;\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: baseline;\">When you\u2019re breathing is erratic, the body tries to protect the organs which could leave you feeling dizzy and disorientated. Which seems normal for an interview, right? But trust us, you don\u2019t have to have a racing heart and sweaty palms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-be-prompt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; vertical-align: baseline;\">Be prompt<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: baseline;\">You want to start off strong and this means that you need to be prepped and ready. Trust us, it\u2019s pretty hard to sound happy and upbeat when you\u2019re not smiling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-be-the-voice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; vertical-align: baseline;\">Be the voice \u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: baseline;\">There are few things that put people to sleep faster than a one-tone drone. Make sure to add some excitement to your voice by alternating the pitch slightly. While that monotone voice might be your usual style, it comes off as lacking interest.
