That\u2019s because, to save money, he would get a motel room with 2 single beds\u2014for a family of 6. Then, once he got the key, we would quietly go into the room, avoiding the lobby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we got up there, my dad would make \u201cthe phone call.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-60e752d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"60e752d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad: \u201cHi, this is room 324,\u201d he would say. \u201cCould you bring some more towels to our room?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receptionist: \u201cYes, sir. How many do you need? 1? 2?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad: \u201cHow about 4? And if you can send 2 cots, that would be great.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receptionist: \u201cSir, this room is booked for double occupancy only. We cannot\u2014\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad: \u201cThank you!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b1c379e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b1c379e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a child, I thought this was normal. Only later did we realize how hilarious it was to squeeze 6 people into a room for 2. But without things like this (and little Ramit sleeping on a couch) it gets pretty expensive to take a big family on a trip.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our family vacations were fun but simple: road trips to visit our family in LA. That was it!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-26fc3eb elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"26fc3eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fdc4e25 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fdc4e25\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast forward about 30 years. My wife, Cass, and I visited Mexico and stayed at one of my favorite hotels. We had an amazing time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we were there, we said, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis would be a great place to come back to with our friends.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So a few years later, we picked a date, and I emailed a few friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what the email said:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-500ae0e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"500ae0e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want to spend time together! Here\u2019s our plan:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re going for 5 days on these dates to Rosewood Mayakoba.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My vision is: 3 dinners together; the rest is total free time. You might lounge by the pool, you might work out, you might rent a boat\u2014whatever you want.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll handle planning the dinners. You just come!\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramit<\/span><\/i><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-babecc7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"babecc7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And guess what? It was wonderful to be in this magical place with good friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you notice about these two vacations?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up, price was the main factor when planning vacations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For our Mexico trip? Price had nothing to do with it. We <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/how-to-plan-a-vacation\/\">built it around the things that are important to us<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beautiful locations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lasting memories with friends\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delicious food\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c258777 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"c258777\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a8ede7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a8ede7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These things are part of our Rich Life. We wanted to do it. Price was an afterthought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many things like this that I spend extravagantly on. For example, you\u2019ll never see me wearing an expensive watch!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Same goes for sports, organic meat, and cars. I\u2019m not joking. Not your parents\u2019, not your friends\u2019. Not even mine. Yours.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a life that is full. Embrace it. This is the fun part!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What it looks like:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I love Japanese design and architecture. I even collect photos and examples of what I love.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When my wife, Cass, and I traveled to Japan, I wanted to visit the home of a Japanese couple. This is very uncommon, so I hired a firm to help us arrange it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The couple were both architects, so they showed us their home. Then I showed them pictures I\u2019d collected, and they explained the Japanese design philosophy behind them. I loved it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also took a mini-cruise on an amazing boat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This trip would make no sense to others, but to me, it was incredibly meaningful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph {\"align\":\"center\"} --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d95dc0e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d95dc0e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">RICH LIFE RULE #2: <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ffc731 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7ffc731\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Rich Life puts you in control<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-680bb0e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"680bb0e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>What it means:\u00a0<\/b>Life is not a Disney movie. Nobody\u2019s coming to rescue you!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that you can\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/how-do-i-control-my-finances\/\">take control of your finances<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and build your Rich Life \u2014 exactly the way\u00a0<i>you<\/i>\u00a0want it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>What it looks like:<\/b>\u00a0When I first graduated from college, I turned down a job offer at Google to join a start-up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Later, I turned down VC investment to run IWT, which was 100% bootstrapped, so I could maintain control. That is part of my Rich Life.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1c11f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f1c11f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">RICH LIFE RULE #3:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3de9e6c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3de9e6c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Getting started is more important than becoming an expert<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bca24e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bca24e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>What it means:\u00a0<\/b>Too many of us get overwhelmed thinking we need to do everything perfectly. You know what ends up happening?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/how-to-stop-procrastinating\/\"><strong>We do nothing at all<\/strong><\/a><strong>!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This can be especially true when we\u2019re designing our Rich Life. That\u2019s why the easiest way to build your Rich Life is to take it one step at a time\u2014and not worry about being perfect.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I call this the 85% Solution. I\u2019d rather act and get it 85% right than do nothing. Think about it: 85% of the way is far better than 0%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This applies to money too. Once your money system is good enough\u2014or 85% of the way there\u2014you can get on with your life and go do the things you really want to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>What it looks like:<\/b>\u00a0I keep things simple:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">I have a very simple<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/high-risk-vs-low-risk-investing\/\">\u00a0investment<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0portfolio.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">I have a few\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/how-to-choose-a-credit-card-2\/\">credit cards<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">I follow a simple fitness program.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you keep things simple, it\u2019s easier to get started and easier to keep going. Most importantly, it leaves you more time for the things you love.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5febaf0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5febaf0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">RICH LIFE RULE #4:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db4e91f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"db4e91f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">It\u2019s okay to make mistakes<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f645f94 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f645f94\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>What it means:\u00a0<\/b>The path to a Rich Life isn\u2019t perfect.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll make money mistakes and relationship mistakes. You may even change what a Rich Life looks like for you. And that\u2019s totally fine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Make your mistakes early, when the stakes are lower, and you can learn from them.<\/p>\n<p><b>What it looks like:\u00a0<\/b>I made mistakes by investing in individual stocks early on. If you read Chapter 7 of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/books\/i-will-teach-you-to-be-rich-second-edition-no-guilt-no-excuses-no-bs-just-a-6-week-program-that-works\/9781523505746\">my book<\/a><\/strong>, you know why this is a bad idea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In my business,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/hiring-mistakes-that-cost-me-20k\/\">I\u2019ve hired the wrong people<\/a><\/strong>. I haven\u2019t managed properly. I\u2019ve made bad strategic choices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All normal!<\/p>\n<p>I even have a failures folder set up in my email account. If I\u2019m not sending 5-7 failures there a month, I know that I\u2019m not trying enough. And if I\u2019m not trying enough, I\u2019m not learning enough.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2262126 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2262126\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">RICH LIFE RULE #5:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89ddcee elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"89ddcee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Play offense, not defense<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3a043a3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3a043a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"background-color: #f5eee4; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">What it means:\u00a0<\/span>Too many of us play defense with our finances:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"background-color: #f5eee4;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\">We wait until the end of the month, then look at our spending and shrug: \u201cI guess I spent that much.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">We accept onerous fees.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">We don\u2019t question complicated advice because it\u2019s given to us in a language we don\u2019t understand.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"background-color: #f5eee4; color: #000000;\">Don\u2019t do this.
