You\u2019re asking someone to stick their neck out for you and you want to make them feel at ease about your qualifications and suitability for the position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also want to save them time and effort. The easier you make it for the person to refer you, the more likely it is that they\u2019ll follow through.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always have the the following documents on hand:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your resume or CV<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A copy of the job posting for the position you\u2019re pursuing (if there\u2019s no formal job posting but you found out about the position through word of mouth, be sure to put that in your email or letter)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A link to an online portfolio or samples of your work\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reference letters from former supervisors, teachers, guidance counselors, and others<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Links to online testimonials about your work performance from your current customer base<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can even pre-write a referral letter on their behalf to save time, as long as you don\u2019t think providing such a draft is too presumptuous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-29ec247 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default qodef-elementor-content-no\" data-id=\"29ec247\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-45b9d9c\" data-id=\"45b9d9c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8075fea elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8075fea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Deciding whether to go with the formal vs. informal approach<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a1274e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a1274e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve gathered all the relevant information they\u2019ll need to fulfill your referral request, it\u2019s time to approach them to ask for a referral for the position you want to apply to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on how well you know the person, their professional position relative to yours, and any inside knowledge you have about their preferences, you can approach them in an informal manner (i.e., greet them by their first name and make the initial outreach personal and chatty) or in a more formal way (i.e., send a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/cover-letter-tips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formal cover letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using proper greeting titles, keeping the tone professional and businesslike).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you choose a formal or an informal tone, it\u2019s best to reach out to the person in writing so you can share the information you\u2019ve gathered about your background, education, and credentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email is usually best, although you can make your request via mail or through LinkedIn. Using other social media platforms (e.g., Facebook or Instagram) isn\u2019t recommended because you might alienate your prospective referrer by imposing on their personal space.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can create an email template if you plan to reach out to several people for referrals, but keep in mind that each email you send should be personalized for the specific recipient.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter what route you decide to take, be sure to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduce yourself or remind the person how they know you.&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re reaching out to them because of a mutual friend or connection, say so.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know them but haven\u2019t been in contact for a while, put in a reminder about how you\u2019re associated.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put this information succinctly in the subject line. For instance, your email subject line might say, \u201cRequest for job referral from Jane Doe, a mutual friend of Jack Smith.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be upfront about why you\u2019re writing to them.&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cut to the chase as quickly as you can by stating that you\u2019re writing to ask them for a referral for a particular job.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Point out that you\u2019ve included a job description, your resume, and, if applicable, work samples.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give them an out if they aren\u2019t comfortable offering a referral. The last thing you want to do is put anyone on the spot or make them feel uncomfortable.&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qualify your request by offering your referral source a way to decline your request. This is especially important if your initial contact was in person or over the phone, but it\u2019s also important if you want to keep abreast of the referral source\u2019s progress or to ensure they\u2019ve followed through with their promise of a referral.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to following up via email, another strategy I use is the Cascade Sequence, where after I send the initial emails, I send them a message on LinkedIn after 2 days, and another message on Twitter 2 days after that. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3725c90 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default qodef-elementor-content-no\" data-id=\"3725c90\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e3acefd\" data-id=\"e3acefd\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-03f6dc1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"03f6dc1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Thanking the referrer (regardless of the outcome) <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fdf5c52 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fdf5c52\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget to thank your referrer, preferably with a hand-written thank-you note. If the referral culminates in an interview or a job offer, you\u2019ll want to offer your thanks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know them well enough or it seems appropriate, you can even offer to take them to lunch or out for a cup of coffee to thank them in person. If you don\u2019t have an \u201cace in the hole\u201d referral source already, though, you\u2019ll need to do some sleuthing to find someone you can approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good place to start is your college or graduate school alumni listings. Some schools offer online alumni directories that you can search by company or location. You can also call the school\u2019s alumni office and ask if they can introduce you to a fellow graduate who works at the company you\u2019re interested in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another resource is searching LinkedIn profiles for possible referral sources. Conduct a search of the company name to see if any of the people listed as business owners, employees, or affiliates are members of your network. You can also check out the company\u2019s website and look for a list of employee bios \u2014 these are often found in the \u201cAbout Us\u201d or \u201cOur Team\u201d tab.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you don\u2019t know any of the people listed, look for commonalities like schools attended, prior workplaces, or the same hometown.
