And though there\u2019s no set way to identify a bull market, it typically means that asset classes of all types \u2014 such as stocks, bonds, real estate \u2014 rise for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why you\u2019ll hear about investors who are confident in the market being described as \u201cbullish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Other key indicators of a bull market:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High gross domestic product (GDP). <\/strong>If a country\u2019s GDP is high that means consumer spending is also high \u2014 a common indicator of a flourishing economy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rising stock prices. <\/strong>More people are confident that the market will continue to go up, so most major indices will also rise.<\/li>\n<li><strong>More \u201clong\u201d stock trading. <\/strong>Since the financial climate is hopeful, investors are more hungry to buy shares during a bull market and hold onto them, confident they will continue to rise. This is known as long stock trading.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low unemployment rates. <\/strong>Growth in businesses means growth in the workforce. More people will have jobs in a bull market.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>When a bull market occurs, it\u2019s typically here for a long time. Morningstar conducted <u><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/bull-market-buys-2-growth-104000916.html\">a study<\/a><\/u>\u00a0that took a look at market trends from 1926 to 2017 and discovered that the average bull market lasted NINE years.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#Bull-vs-bear-at-a-glance\">Back to Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"bull-market-examples\">Notable bull market examples<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Post-WWII. <\/strong>The years during and following WWII (from the 1940s through the 1950s) were exemplary of a bull market as the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercatus.org\/publication\/economic-recovery-lessons-post-world-war-ii-period\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. economy prospered<\/a><\/u>\u00a0when millions of soldiers returned home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The 1980s-2000s<\/strong>. A <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/Business\/2013\/0504\/Bull-markets-how-this-one-stacks-up-in-history\/1987-2000-582-percent-gain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">long bull market<\/a><\/u>\u00a0occurred from the early-1980s up until the dot-com bubble bursting in the early-2000s. During this bull market there was an average market gain of nearly 600%.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Today. <\/strong>Since 2017, the United States has been going through a bull market. Jobs are growing, the average returns on investments are high, and we\u2019re starting to bounce back from the effects of the housing market crash and subsequent bear market that occurred in 2008 (more on that in a bit).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a bull market in a nutshell. which there is pessimism about the market. Generally, there\u2019s stagnation or a downward trend, people\u2019s confidence in the economy is low, and more people are selling stock than buying. A bear market is also a good indicator of a recession \u2014 a long-term period of negative growth.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As such, investors who are pessimistic about market trends are typically described as being \u201cbearish<em>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Other key indicators of a bear market:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Loss of jobs. <\/strong>Low employment rates are typically a sign of a bear market. It\u2019s one way to benefit from a down market. A very bearish move.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Though a bear market seems bad, it doesn\u2019t typically last long. Remember that study from Morningstar? It shows that the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/bull-market-buys-2-growth-104000916.html\">average bear market lasts only 1.4 years<\/a><\/u>, while the average cumulative loss from a bear market is 41%.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Also there are several ways investors can benefit from a bear market. One example: would you rather be buying a house when prices are going up or down?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Another: Would you rather invest in the market at its bottom or at its peak?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#Bull-vs-bear-at-a-glance\">Back to Top<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bear-market-examples\">Notable bear market examples<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Great Depression. <\/strong>The stock market crash of 1929 kicked off the start of the most famous bear market period: <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/a-history-of-bear-markets-4582652\">The Great Depression<\/a><\/u>. It didn\u2019t end for years afterward, and during that time millions of Americans lost their jobs, homes, and well-being. It wasn\u2019t just America either. The entire world felt the impacts of America\u2019s bear market.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The dot-com burst. <\/strong>The years following the dot-com burst of the early-2000s saw a massive dip in the stock market as well as the shuttering of countless tech companies. Household wealth also took a hit of over $6 trillion leading to a recession, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/why-the-housing-bubble-tanked-the-economy-and-the-tech-bubble-didnt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to FiveThirtyEight<\/a><\/u>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The housing market crash. <\/strong>Though nearly a decade has passed, the housing market crash of 2008 is still a fresh wound for many people.
