So just listen and do what I say, please.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-do-if-you-win-the-lottery-rule-1-shut-the-hell-up\"><strong><b>What to do if you win the lottery <\/b>RULE #1: Shut The Hell Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Shut your mouth right now, seriously.<\/p>\n\n<p>Do not tell anyone.<\/p>\n\n<p>Do not tell your boss, your loud-mouthed cousin with the mustache, or even your kids.<\/p>\n\n<p>You can tell 1 person:<\/p>\n\n<p>Your spouse.<\/p>\n\n<p>And then tell them this:<\/p>\n\n<p>Shut The Hell Up.<\/p>\n\n<p>This is your new motto for the next 6 months.<\/p>\n\n<p>Lotto winner Mavis Wanczyk (who won the 758.7 million Powerball) did not follow this advice and decided to tell her boss, the press, and therefore the whole world.<\/p>\n\n<p>Immediately after, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/national\/mass-police-ramp-patrols-758-7m-powerball-winner-home-article-1.3444838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">random people came out of the woodwork and the police have had to watch her house<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here are the scariest people who will try to find you, in descending order:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kidnappers who will hold you for ransom<\/li>\n<li>Scammy \u201cwealth managers\u201d who will bleed you dry<\/li>\n<li>Uncle Joe, who wants you to invest in his dumb idea for a themed bar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>DON\u2019T DO IT. You can always choose to reveal your new wealth later once you have the proper precautions set up. But once the genie is out of the bottle, you can never put it back in. Be quiet and tell no one for now.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-do-if-you-win-the-lottery-rule-2-you-have-2-new-best-friends-your-lawyer-and-your-financial-advisor\"><strong><b>What to do if you win the lottery <\/b>RULE #2: You have 2 new best friends: your lawyer and your financial advisor<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>I get it, you don\u2019t have a lawyer.<\/p>\n\n<p>Now you do.<\/p>\n\n<p>You call up the biggest, most white-collar law firm in the country (just google \u201c<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=highest+paid+law+firm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highest paid law firm<\/a><\/u>\u201d) and tell them you want a lawyer to help with taxes and trusts.<\/p>\n\n<p>When they ask why, tell them \u201cI\u2019ve recently come into some money and I\u2019d like someone to coordinate my affairs.\u201d They will charge you $500 or $600\/hour. Pay it, happily.<\/p>\n\n<p>This lawyer is now your conduit with the outside world.<\/p>\n\n<p>Who contacts the lottery to tell them about the winning ticket?<\/p>\n\n<p>Not you (see Rule #1). Your lawyer will handle that.<\/p>\n\n<p>Who do they make the check out to? Is it to you?<\/p>\n\n<p>Oh hell no. Your lawyer will set up an anonymous trust for you.<\/p>\n\n<p>Your other new best friend is your financial advisor.<\/p>\n\n<p>Considering I hate most financial advisors and most of you don\u2019t need one (<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Will-Teach-You-Be-Rich-ebook\/dp\/B004WL4BW6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see page 153 of my book for why<\/a><\/u>), this might seem unusual.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, you just received millions of dollars out of the blue. It\u2019s worth a few thousand bucks to get set up.<\/p>\n\n<p>Go to <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.napfa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">napfa.org<\/a><\/u>\u00a0to find a fee-only financial advisor who can guide you through the next few months of setting up your new financial systems.<\/p>\n\n<p>I have a list of questions to ask financial advisors in my book and signs to watch out for.<\/p>\n\n<p>The one thing you want to look out for &#8212; the one sign you\u2019ve chosen a salesperson, not a real advisor &#8212; is if they take a percentage of your assets.<\/p>\n\n<p>DO NOT sign up with some nutty wealth advisor who sweet talks you with a beautiful British accent.<\/p>\n\n<p>Just follow my directions from the book and your advisor can help you with the rest.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-do-if-you-win-the-lottery-rule-3-do-not-change-anything-with-3-exceptions\"><strong><b>What to do if you win the lottery <\/b>RULE<\/strong><strong>\u00a0#3: Do not change anything (with 3 exceptions)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>You know all those movies about how a group of criminals gets away with a heist, but one idiot gets the entire crew caught because he goes out the next day and buys a fur coat and a $200,000 car? Do not do that.<\/p>\n\n<p>For 6 months, don\u2019t change anything.<\/p>\n\n<p>No new car, no extravagant trips, don\u2019t quit your job. Your lawyer and financial advisor will help you get set up.<\/p>\n\n<p>This falls under Advice Everyone Says But Nobody Takes:<\/p>\n\n<p>When someone dies or you get a huge amount of sudden money, do not change anything for 6 months.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you really need to quit your job, when people ask what you\u2019re doing now, your line is, \u201cI\u2019m doing some consulting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>However, if you were a cashier at 7-11, I\u2019m not sure if people are going to believe you\u2019re a consultant. Anyway, your call.<\/p>\n\n<p>I know most of you won\u2019t follow this advice, so I came up with a list of acceptable things to spend money on:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extra guac at Chipotle<\/li>\n<li>Taco Bell Mexican Pizza<\/li>\n<li>I also hereby authorize you to buy every product from <u><a href=\"https:\/\/iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/products<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>After 6 months? Just don\u2019t spend it all in one place.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently Asked Questions:<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you pay taxes on lottery winnings?<\/h3>\n\n<p>US lottery taxes differ from other countries because winnings can consider taxable income for both federal and state taxes. Unfortunately, that means the government gets to claim 24% of your winnings right off the bat.
