That\u2019s because today I&#8217;m talking about <em>keystone habits. <\/em>These are the habits that \u2014 once implemented \u2014 have a positive impact on many other facets of your life.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Like the first domino pushed in a row of others, all you need to do is perform this one habit and you\u2019ll see the benefits ripple out.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s break down exactly what a keystone habit is, its origins, and give you three of the best keystone habits you can start today.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.tiskd2ve8xsx\">What are keystone habits?<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Charles Duhigg introduced the concept of keystone habits to millions in his book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/charlesduhigg.com\/the-power-of-habit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Power of Habit<\/a><\/em><em>. <\/em>In it, he describes keystone habits as \u201cchain reactions that help other good habits take hold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>From Charles:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe power of a keystone habit draws from its ability to change your self-image. Basically anything can become a keystone habit if it has this power to make you see yourself in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at a simple example: Dressing better. If you\u2019re normally seen as the person to whom jeans are \u201cdressing up,\u201d a suit and tie or a nice dress might be completely foreign to you.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Imagine taking the initiative and dressing up for a week though. How do you think that would impact you psychologically?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden you\u2019re looking better. People are perceiving you in a new light \u2014 and therefore <em>treating <\/em>you differently. Maybe the barista refers to you as \u201csir\u201d or \u201cma\u2019am.\u201d When that happens, you\u2019re likely to start carrying yourself differently. Maybe you\u2019re more confident and self-assured.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>See what\u2019s happening? It\u2019s one seemingly small change today that has an outsized impact on other areas of your life.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just dressing better. It\u2019s feeling more confident. It\u2019s being treated better by the people around you.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the power of keystone habits.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.xn7x0zi3mx5t\">3 keystone habits that\u2019ll change your life<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Not all keystone habits are necessarily positive. After all, if you pick up the habit of smoking a pack a day or drinking a sixer of Bud Light each night, you\u2019re going to see it impact other areas of your life negatively.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>However, if you recognize good keystone habits and adopt them, you\u2019ll find that your life can drastically improve because of one simple change.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Here are three of the best ones you can implement to help get you started.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.gvvlzb4vmuxb\">Keystone habit 1: More exercise<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Exercising regularly is perhaps the most impactful keystone habit you can implement.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>And it makes sense. Once you start exercising, you\u2019re not only becoming more conscious about the way your body looks but also what you\u2019re putting into your body as well.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This consciousness starts to spread to other areas of your life. Maybe you\u2019re not eating takeout or going to bars as often, because it\u2019s unhealthy. That means you\u2019re saving money each month you\u2019d otherwise have spent going out.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s where\u00a0that ripple effect happens: once you see that you\u2019re saving more, you\u2019ll be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/money-dials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spend money <em>consciously<\/em> toward your Money Dial<\/a><em>. <\/em>That means using that money and spending it on things that you LOVE instead of crappy takeout.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Charles Duhigg even mentions it in his book as a big keystone habit:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you start exercising habitually, according to studies, you start eating more healthfully. That makes sense. You start feeling good about your body. For many people, when they start exercising, they stop using their credit cards quite so often. They procrastinate less at work. They do their dishes earlier in the day. It seems to be evidence that for many people, exercise is a keystone habit. Once you start to change your exercise habits, it sets off a chain reaction that changes other habits as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>When I started training for a marathon, I noticed the effects of regular running almost immediately. I knew I had to clean up my lifestyle if I wanted to finish running all 26.2 miles.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>That meant giving up smoking, cutting back on after work beers, and getting good sleep. And it worked. sleep<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>One of the most harmful side effects of \u201chustle culture\u201d is countless people out there forgoing sleep. After all, more time awake means more work done \u2026 right?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Wrong. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation-now\/2018\/09\/04\/lack-sleep-raise-risk-stroke-early-death-studies\/1189060002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies have shown that a lack of sleep increases the chances of stroke, heart disease, and an early death<\/a>&nbsp;(which \u2014 you know \u2014 definitely cuts down the time you can get work done).&nbsp;<span style=\"color: inherit;\">I wrote about this in this<\/span><span style=\"color: inherit;\">&nbsp;post on&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com\/how-to-be-more-productive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">productivity<\/a><span style=\"color: inherit;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy fundamental 80% Win here is that I sleep 7.5 to 8 hours almost every night. It\u2019s not sexy. But as I\u2019m writing this at 9:34am, I slept 8 hours last night and I woke up knowing I was going to have a productive day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>When you get adequate sleep, your mind and body are primed for a productive day. That means more energy and mental capacity to do the work you want to do \u2014 and do it well.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I wake up after a full, uninterrupted night\u2019s sleep, I\u2019m ready to meet the day,\u201d says Richard, a Denver-based programmer and IT technician. \u201cI have more energy in the day to get work done and I don\u2019t feel that afternoon drag where I feel like I need a nap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>If you wake up groggy on four hours of sleep, do you think you\u2019ll be as productive? Sure, you might have more time to work on things, but if your mind and body aren\u2019t in the right place, you sure as heck aren\u2019t getting as many things done.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>How you can get started:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid electronics (cell phone, laptop, television) for 30 minutes to an hour before bed.<\/li>\n<li>Download a sleep app (like <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/sleep-cycle-alarm-clock\/id320606217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sleep Cycle<\/a>) that can help you track your sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Set a time that you\u2019ll go to bed each night and sleep for at least 7-8 hours a night.&nbsp;If you have an Apple product, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT208655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple\u2019s sleep reminder tool<\/a>&nbsp;to manage this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.lbjamn834cwg\">Keystone habit 3: Waking up earlier<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Waking up earlier has a number of benefits.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>First, research shows that the early morning hours are prime for productivity. Harvard biologist <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1559-1816.2009.00549.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christoph Randler<\/a>&nbsp;conducted a study that showed that early risers are more likely to set long-term goals and be more motivated than their late-rising counterparts.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Not only that but early risers tend to have a higher level of cognition and ability to solve complex problems, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.3758%2Fs13421-012-0256-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to another study<\/a>. At I Will Teach You To Be Rich, we\u2019ve talked about the limited amount of willpower&nbsp;humans have. When we wake up, our willpower is still high because we\u2019ve used less of it. As the day goes on, our willpower is depleted until it drains completely and all we want to do is watch Netflix after work rather than, say, head to the gym.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t just take our word for it.
