But you own your email list. Nobody can take it away.<\/p><p>I could almost hear sirens going off in Tim\u2019s head as I said this. Yes, he has a huge social following, but he doesn\u2019t control it.<\/p><p>Since our conversation, Tim\u2019s worked on growing his own email list.<\/p><p>But the moral of the story is this: Don\u2019t leave your business in somebody else\u2019s hands. If you build your audience on some external platform, you\u2019re at their mercy. Ugh.<\/p><p>I say door-to-door selling is the worst, but if you think about it, most marketing efforts are like this. You hand someone a flyer. You print a brochure. You talk to someone over the phone.<\/p><p>These messages are created once, seen\/heard once, and then \u2014 poof \u2014 gone forever.<\/p><p>But thanks to the power of email marketing and automation, you can write ONE great email and profit from it again and again.<\/p><p>Whether you have 10 people on your list or 100,000 subscribers, email scales exponentially.<\/p><p>For example, I wrote an email in 2011.<\/p><p>Over 450,000 people have read that email in the last five years. All automatically. I didn\u2019t lift a finger.<\/p><p>When you put the scaling power of email to work, you\u2019ll have more time to focus on growing your business. Now, I\u2019ve learned how to create opt-ins that people want. The first couple of subject lines sucked.<\/p><p>But as I kept brainstorming \u2014 near the bottom of the list \u2014 some of these subject lines turned out strong.<\/p><p>For example, I like this last one: I can\u2019t believe people pay him to do this\u2026 It\u2019s intriguing. And I could see myself sending that to a friend.<\/p><p>Most of the time that\u2019s all you need for a great subject line.<\/p><p>Having said that, sometimes it\u2019s tough to know what to say. You can sit around racking your brain all day long\u2026but nothing seems to stick.<\/p><p>If that happens to you, don\u2019t worry. They can come across as generic if you\u2019re not careful.<\/p><p>I mean, how many times have you seen \u201c7 productivity secrets\u201d or \u201c10 ways to reduce stress?\u201d<\/p><p>Headlines like this work a few times, but after awhile of seeing the same old recycled headline formulas, it gets old.<\/p><p>And it trains your readers not to engage with them.<\/p><p>Not to mention, how robotic is it when every email starts the same way: \u201c10 ways to\u2026\u201d, \u201c9 things you\u2026?\u201d<\/p><p>That\u2019s why I try to avoid formulaic headlines and subject lines when I can.<\/p><p>But let\u2019s get real. He\u2019d look at you like you were crazy. So what would you do?<\/p><p>You\u2019d take a sip of your drink and say, \u201c<em>We help business owners save time and money by cutting out the middle man.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><p>Nothing fancy. So while \u201ctabulating submissions\u201d isn\u2019t something we would all say, it\u2019s a perfect fit for his personality. That\u2019s the key. Here are a few things to notice about this email that you should add to your copy toolbox:<\/p><p><strong>The subject line: \u201cre: the contest\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>At the time, Bryan was hosting a 24-hour list-building contest for his readers. So this was a relevant subject line. Unlike most marketers, who\u2019d use gimmicky subject lines like \u201cLAST CALL,\u201d look at what he did. He wrote simply. He didn\u2019t even use capital letters. That\u2019s the kind of email you\u2019d get from a friend. Important to note: He was about to start selling something at the time. But do you get that feeling?<\/p><p><strong>The lead<\/strong><\/p><p>He starts this email with a casual \u201cGooooooood morning!\u201d Then, very casually, he showcases some of the results from REAL people. How relatable is that? You\u2019re sucked into this email from the opening words all the way to bottom \u2014 where he\u2019s pitching you to join his mini-course.<\/p><p><strong>I also love the screenshots of texts \u2014 from his MOM!<\/strong><\/p><p>This is so good. He not only includes tweets of his students going through the challenge, but he shows you a text he got from his 56-year-old mother, who\u2019s also giving it a shot. I don\u2019t know if anyone can read that and not smile. It\u2019s fun.<\/p><p>Keep this in mind when writing your emails: It\u2019s a conversation.<\/p><div style=\"all: initial;\"><div style=\"position: fixed; z-index: 2147483647; inset: 16px; pointer-events: none; font-family: sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-00f321f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"00f321f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Bring Your Email Copy to Life<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6cd9ae6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6cd9ae6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Vague copy is a one-way ticket to readers unsubscribing. Take a look at these simple edits to turn vague copy into specific copy. Notice how much more powerful the specific copy is when you read it:<\/p><p><strong>Boring<\/strong>: \u201cI don\u2019t like commuting.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Specific:<\/strong> \u201cEvery single day, I wake up and think, \u2018Oh God, I can\u2019t take yet another 45-minutes of sitting through gridlocked traffic just to get to some job that I don\u2019t even like.\u2019\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Boring:<\/strong> \u201cYou\u2019ll have freedom and flexibility.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Specific:<\/strong> \u201cWant to take a break from work and see a movie at 1pm on a random Wednesday? You can do that. Have a friend in town and want to meet him for lunch? You can do that, too \u2014 and no, you won\u2019t have to ask your boss if it\u2019s okay.\u2019\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Boring:<\/strong> \u201cYou\u2019ll look great.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Specific<\/strong>: \u201cYou\u2019ll finally be able to fit into your high school jeans and be the envy of all your friends.\u201d<\/p><p>These edits will make people feel like they know you, like you\u2019re their friend who they can laugh with and open up to.
